Hall Effect vs TMR Joysticks: What's the Difference?

Both are magnetic-sensor joysticks that solve the drift problem at its root. Here's how they differ, why we use each one, and which controllers get which.

The problem both of them solve

A traditional joystick (a "potentiometer" stick) senses movement with physical contact: a wiper drags across a carbon resistive track. Every motion scrapes away a tiny bit of material. Over time the track wears unevenly or picks up contamination, and the controller starts reading input you never gave it. That's stick drift.

Hall Effect and TMR joysticks both get rid of the physical contact. Instead of a wiper on a track, they use a tiny magnet and a sensor that reads the magnetic field as the stick tilts. Nothing rubs, so nothing wears down — which is why a magnetic stick can outlast the original by years.

Hall Effect joysticks

Hall Effect sensors detect the strength of a magnetic field. As the stick moves the magnet, the field at the sensor changes and the controller translates that into position. They've been used in industrial and aerospace controls for decades because they're durable and reliable.

  • Feels identical in the hand to a normal stick.

TMR joysticks

TMR stands for tunnelling magnetoresistance. It's a newer magnetic-sensing technology that, in short, reads the field with greater sensitivity while drawing less power. For a wireless controller — especially a power-hungry one like the PS5 DualSense — lower draw is a real, practical advantage.

  • Same no-contact, no-wear benefit as Hall Effect.
  • Lower power consumption — easier on battery life.
  • High sensitivity for consistent, precise centring.

So which is better?

For solving drift, both are a huge upgrade over a stock potentiometer stick — that's the part that matters most. TMR is the more advanced of the two, mainly thanks to its lower power draw, which is why we reach for K-SILVER TMR sticks on PS5 and Xbox repairs. On PS4 we use Ginful Hall Effect sticks, which drop in cleanly and perform beautifully for that controller. In day-to-day play, you won't feel a difference between the two — both just work, and keep working.

Is TMR better than Hall Effect?

TMR is newer and draws less power, which helps battery life — so we use it on PS5 and Xbox. For eliminating drift, both are excellent; the difference in feel is negligible.

Do magnetic sticks feel different to play with?

No. Hall Effect and TMR sticks have the same throw and resistance as standard sticks. They only change how movement is sensed, not how it feels.

Which sticks do you install?

K-SILVER TMR joysticks on PS5 and Xbox Series, and Ginful Hall Effect joysticks on PS4. They're included in drift repairs on those controllers.

Will a magnetic stick really stop drift?

Drift from a worn potentiometer track can't happen with a contact-free magnetic sensor. The most common cause of drift is removed entirely.
